We are Creating a Cottage Garden

We are creating a cottage garden in our back yard!

I have been admiring country cottage gardens for a long time, but really have not had the time or a plan to do one in the past. The recent quarantine gave me tons of free time to design and develop a plan for an unused area in our back yard. In the last couple of years, we unfortunately had to bring down a couple of dead trees in this corner of the yard.  The silver lining, is it left a large open space to turn into something different and unique like our cottage garden.

I first started by designing a plan.  My musts on the list included pathways throughout, sections for different types of cut flowers, a pad for a raised garden, a place to sit, and berry bushes.

After walking the space and sketching out on paper what I wanted, I set to work.

The space is quite large, so it was too much to tackle all at once. It's ok to have a space which is a work in progress.  Having an overall plan from the start will allow me to tackle sections at a time.

I weeded and weeded and weeded!  And guess what? There's many more weeds that need to be removed.  Like I said, baby steps.  After weeding, I laid weed barrier and then gravel to create a pad and pathways with pavers.  After, soil was laid, a raspberry and blackberry bush were planted.

Lastly, I added some wildflowers seeds and perennials to dot through the space. A stock trough will serve as next years raised garden.  My garden cart, see this post, (HERE) is in full bloom and producing lots of fun veggies and herbs this year. My plan is to use the cart for herbs next year and the stock trough for vegetables.

The white trellis are handmade and I purchased them on Etsy (LINK).  They come unfinished and I painted them white.

A recent addition to the garden was the Dog (Labrador) Weathervane on a Garden Pole from Good Directions (LINK).  I just love this beautiful showpiece!  It's like the icing on the cake.
