Teaching Life Skills to your Child: Grocery Store Math

One of the best things about homeschooling is that you can make learning happen anywhere!  I have enjoyed turning even the most mundane activities into a learning experience for Emma.  I feel like I often missed out on teaching our children basic life skills because we were so caught up in the craziness of school, sports and just life in general.  One of my goals this year is to slow down and teach her some valuable life skills that will help her be a more well-rounded individual as an adult.

We just finished a science unit on nutrition and I was looking for a way to extend it when I came across this packet called Grocery Store Math on the site Teachers Pay Teachers. For $5 you get a 16 page digital download math packet.

Here is a description of the work that the student will be doing:

“Students will need to find foods/products in different sections of the store. Some items need to just be found for price. Students will be adding, comparing, and finding the difference in price of items. They will have to find items on sale and compare name brands from generic or store brands.”

The packet is broken up into different sections so this first time, we did the pages pertaining to the produce section.  We were weighing fruits and vegetables, cost comparing and finding total cost.  I definitely recommend parent participation particularly with younger children and bring your calculator along!

We had so much fun with this activity!  Our plan is to do a couple of pages each time we go to the store.  I highly recommend this packet not just for homeschoolers, but any parent who wants to teach their child these important life skills.

To life feeling like home!
