Spring Mantel Makeover

I have had the same basic mantle scape for I don't know how many years.  I change it just enough to add something seasonal, but decided I wanted a new look this Spring. On our snow day last week, I decided to tackle this project.  Snow outside and spring inside! I wanted to start with a blank slate, so I removed everything and wiped down the mantel.  Here is where I began.

My first step was to paint two existing mirrors that have been hanging around for awhile with ivory chalk paint to lighten them up.  Here is the paint I used which I purchased at Michaels.

IMG_7865I did not prime anything, just slapped the paint on.  Chalk paint does a very thorough coverage with 2-3 coats.  The finish is matte.

They had two different finishes, but with the paint, look unified.

The basket of greens was something I used to hang, but decided to set it in front.  I also painted the large D and hot glued it on the front of the basket.  Adding the lanterns on one side and it was complete.  I like how it is asymmetrical and not perfect.  That adds a touch of whimsy.

I really like how it turned out.  Our fireplace can handle something large.  The 2 mirrors draw your eye up and since our family room is two-story, it gives the illusion of filling the empty space above the fireplace.
