Schoolhouse Lighting and Custom Island

The look of vintage schoolhouse lighting and a deep shelved custom island give our new cottage kitchen a sophisticated and elegant look.

I'm in love with our last few pieces of this renovation.  They just seem to tie it all together in a way that I only hoped would happen!  It's very rewarding to see your vision come to life.  Today I am sharing all about the vintage schoolhouse lighting we chose and the custom island built for this space.

Our kitchen was completely gutted, so it was ready to renovate as soon as we moved in. You may remember THESE gorgeous barn lights from Barn Light Electric that I used in my Modern Farmhouse Bathroom Renovation.  I loved working with Barn Light Electric so much because of their unique take on vintage meets modern lighting, that I decided to collaborate again with them for this renovation.
This time around, I was looking for ceiling mounted fixtures.  We had decided on Antique Brass for most of the finishes in this space, so I knew I wanted to stick with that.  As soon as I saw The Schoolhouse Brass Stem Mount Light, I knew it was what I wanted.  Using two of them over the custom-built island was just the right amount of lighting for this workspace.

We opted for the large glass size, weathered brass, 12-inch stem without the black band.
They look simply gorgeous!  A good mix of vintage and modern which is the style I most enjoy.

Our kitchen island was inspired by THIS product from Painted Fox Home. Unfortunately, the exact dimensions of this one would not work in our space, so with modifications and my tried and true handyman (DM me if you live in the Cincinnati area and need a recommendation!), we designed an island that would better fit in our renovation space. He made this piece out of poplar wood for durability.  To mimic the cabinet fronts, we added trim to create recessed panels.  On the top, we used Miniwax Polyshades in Honey.   To make sure it is waterproof, in addition to the poly in the stain, 4 coats of clear poly were added.  The base and inside was painted with Valspar The Perfect White in Satin.
I'm thinking baskets, large trays, and linens are what I will store on the inside of the island.  Now, I just need to let the island sit for a few days so the stain and paint can adhere and then I'll style it up and share again with you soon!
