One Room Challenge {ORC} Week #4: Functional & Stylish Home Office

Welcome to Week #4!

The “One Room Challenge” is a bi-annual event hosted by Linda of Calling it Home, where featured designers showcase their talents in making over a space.  In addition, the challenge is open to all those who wish to share a makeover of their own with the One Room Challenge audience, via a weekly link up party hosted by the site.  Linda has named those who do so, “Guest Participants.”  It has been a great motivation to keep up with home projects that I have planned.

The One Room Challenge is a six-week challenge to fully complete the room. Each Wednesday, over at Calling it Home, you can follow along with the featured designers. On Thursdays, you can see the link up of all the guest participants and their week by week progress.

If you visited last week, you see that we did a ton of painting!

This week was shopping!  I can't say this was a rough week because who doesn't love to shop?!

Specifically, I was looking for a reading chair, rug, and a project table.  I'm happy to say that I found all three!

My new reading chair is actually a recliner!  You would never know it from the sleek look.  It is the Sara Tufted Recliner from Joss & Main.  My plan to put it in the bay window limited the amount of space I had, so this will work well since there is very little room for an ottoman.  This beautiful rug actually has a greenish black edge with a hand-knotted detail.  It is comfy on the feet and should stand up to high traffic.  It is the Maui Stallion from Rugs USA.

But the thing I am most excited about is my new project table.  You may remember that this space has a double desk area, but each work surface is small.  I am really looking for a flat surface where I can do crafts/ projects and spread things out a bit.  I was so fortunate to run across this chunky table/ desk at a local antique store.  It was exactly the amount of surface space I was hoping for and with a little touching up, will be perfect in the room!

To give this table a new look, I used Kellie Smith Velvet Finishes paint and glaze.  This was the first time I've ever glazed anything, but I found it super easy to do and the result is perfect.  Since the built-ins are now all white, I wanted this piece to be white, but with an antique feel so it would be different from the shelving.

The three products I used were Ready, Velvet Finishes Paint in Understated, and Enhance Dark Glaze.

Ready is a really cool product which does just what it says, readies your piece for painting.  You spray it on and wipe off to remove the dirt, grime, and gloss off the piece of furniture before you begin to paint.

After painting two coats of Understated, I let it dry and applied the Enhance Dark Glaze.  Using a rag, I wiped it on and quickly rubbed the excess off as I moved around the piece.  It helped create depth and dimension to my table giving it an aged over time appearance.

I love the definition it gave to the piece.  I decided to leave the table top wood to add contrast and bring warmth into the space.

You can find product locations, HERE or order ONLINE.

Thank you to Kellie Smith for providing this product for me to try.  All happy opinions are my own.

So what am I hoping to accomplish with this room makeover?

Here are my goals for the next six weeks!

1. Paint wall unit white to freshen up the space.

2.Add Overhead Lighting.

3. A project table of some sort where I can work on crafts and blog projects.

4. A reading chair that is comfortable.

5. Freshen up walls with new treatment and art.

6. A rug to anchor the space.

As you can see from my crossed off list, I have made huge progress!  Next week, I am concentrating on window coverings and some more lighting.  That and styling the space and we will be done!

Be sure to check out the Week #4 progress of the Featured Designers over at Calling it Home.

To life feeling like home!

  7. Wow… You did a great job! You just changed the table like a pro!
The rug reminds me of the handcrafted South Asian rug which brand name is Arong! I also loved the recliner chair… It looks like an accent chair at a first glance but not actually!
Thank you for sharing your brave experience…

So, you are on time. That’s quite the accomplishment already!

I like what you did with the antique table (love how chunky it is!). Makes it interesting to see the detail up close but still work well with the white bookcases.
